Writing Proficiency Test (WPT)

The ACTFL Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) is a carefully designed standardized test that assesses practical writing ability in the target language. It is available on demand, via the internet or in print, and assesses the ability to write effectively on practical, social, and professional topics, in both informal and formal contexts.
Based on information gathered from a background survey and self-assessment, each test is tailored to the test taker’s language ability, with topics tailored to their interests and experience. The test allows writers to demonstrate their full range of abilities in a low-stress testing environment. Writers will receive tasks representing a range of ability levels, as described in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines 2012—Writing. Test takers will be given 20 to 80 minutes to complete, depending on the format and test taker’s level. The test also provides test takers with multiple virtual keyboard options to use essential diacritics not found on a standard American keyboard. Test takers will receive four to five tasks, each with two to three related tasks, in English. They will write responses in the target language, demonstrating narrative, informational, and/or persuasive writing skills. An ACTFL certified WPT examiner will evaluate the candidate's ability according to the ACTFL scale.
